There is a song within my heart,
A melody upon my lips for you,
A loneliness which stings and brings
A sharp awareness of my love so true.
The miles tonight are vast,
‘The chilling winds and snow blow wild, The rolling hills and prairies wide and still-They all converge to shut you out.
But deep and strong as oceans, rolling far-My love that sweeps the land,
My love for you, sweetheart,
My love for you.
The darkness seeks to undercut my hope, And time seems on the side of cruel hours; Yet how my love doth reach beyond
The perils of the sundial and the night.
My love, my love, it burns, not to consume, But breaks apart division’s painful ways. I’m coming soon, buoyed on by love.
The singing rails they tell of home and you!
How long its been, how weary is my heart To wait, that day, to see you once again, To hold you to myself, to never let you go, My Love, my love.
o Life, how good you’ve been to give me her. My Dear, how sweet your lips, your smile,
How wonderful your warm. embrace!
Oh this return, it speaks of love’s enduring worth, A clearer image still, my love for you!

(The poem “My Love” I wrote in my room in the dorm at our Methodist seminary in Kansas City when I was there for a month long course in 1/1967. I went on the train from Grundy Center. I guess I was a little lonely when I wrote the poem. AHS 4/5/05)
