Adam sat upon a rock and knew that all was well.
The landscape glistened in the morning sun.
The green and rolling hills served up serenity and peace.
The blue sky reflected daytime’s pristine beauty,
While far away an eagle called out to its mate.
Adam, naked and unashamed, enjoyed the orchard air
But lonely, with questions in his thoughts,
How could he live alone?
Where would he go to find his kind?
Mid-morning came and went and then…
A presence filled the air,
A powerful yet gentle force was all around.
Adam, feeling faint, lay down upon the grass.
He fell asleep!
As moments passed a miracle took place,
An event to change the course of future’s vast infinity.
He awoke, he felt a tingling in his side,
His hand identified the spot—a rib was gone!
He turned to look upon another of his kind,
Yet not entirely so,
For planted in his mind so that he knew,
This was another person, a woman, gift of God,
Created from his rib, he called her Eve!
And now there were two of them,
Dwelling in a garden,
Friendly, caring for one another,
Soul mates in a lonely place.
She too enjoyed the morning air,
No thought that one should cover self,
Created free they were, free as the billowing clouds and morning mist,
Free as the rippling waves on the lake below.
Ready to start their lives with given skills,
And all around were fertile fields,
And orchards rife with fruit.
Survival would be in God’s hands.
No wild beast to harm, no foe to fear,
No storm to punish,
These two pilgrims on their maiden pilgrimage into tomorrow
With its unknowns, its unbounded nights and days.
Adam and Eve they were, the first, the future’s hope.
They fell in love, and hand in hand they walked
Over the meadows, across the hills and valleys,
Rejoicing in nature’s beauty, wild and wonderful.
They found a place to dwell,
A cave warm and secure,
And food to eat, and fire to cook,
To warm their new abode.
They rested, knowing God was their creator and their guide.
The first day closed.
Their hearts were full of thankfulness and praise.
Tomorrow would offer up another day with new adventure.
What would it bring?
As Adam dozed to sleep, he glanced outside the cave.
He saw an apple tree filled with delicious looking fruit,
And then he slept.
