Those days are gone, so long, so long ago,
a brother and a sister taught me fun,
while passing time brought up the things to do,
and we three raced the hot descending sun!
It often seemed to be a busy time
with much to do to keep it all in place.
To operate the farm my parents tried,
and strive they did to finish jobs with grace.
The tasks were varied, some complex and long,
often calling for more extended chores.
And while we three had ample time to play,
we did the jobs that we had done before.
So varied was our fun, so much to do,
my brother, I and cousin, we took flight,
and pressed to find a really new delight!
And that we did, while peeking in a well,
no cover on it, with our vision clear,
we saw the water very far below,
with many water snakes, we gave a cheer!
The sun arose so early, as did we,
including many duties to be done.
The chores with milking, feeding, and the hay,
The field work all, before the dropping sun.
So close I now the story of my youth,
including work and pleasure through each moon.
My days were full, and learn I did of life,
and then as man, it happened all too soon!
